"Chicago is once again left to lament how much it misses John Thorrington in the center of the park."
I take issue with this statement. Thorrington is a good possession player and passer. However he's a poor man's Paul Scholes- he attempts to make up for defensive technique with enthusiasm, meaning he's always one tackle away from a red card. The bigger problem is that Logan Pause, for years our standout defensive midfielder, seems either to have lost his form, the faith of his manager or both. We started the San Jose match with a slow playmaker (Baggio Husidic) in the holding role and San Jose ran through the middle and through on goal almost at will. In the second half the coach brought on Justin Mapp and moved Marco Pappa into the middle and the lanes that San Jose was finding through the middle largely dried up. When Thorrington comes back he may go directly into the starting lineup, but he'd better hope that Logan Pause is out there with him. Of larger to concern to me is the fact that Brian McBride looks completely knackered, a problem that's highlighted by his partnership with Collins John, essentially a carbon copy of McBride at this point with the difference being that John can still run. I fear a replay of last year's Blanco issue in which a player who doesn't do any work but demands the ball on every possession ends up stifling any hope of keeping the ball or moving it quickly.
