Darren Purse's goal three minutes from time set up a dramatic finale but Palace managed to hang on to escape finishing in the bottom three and condemn Wednesday to League One football next season.
Eight fans were arrested during the violence that flared following Sheffield Wednesday's relegation to League One, South Yorkshire police said today. The club have promised that those found guilty will be banned from Hillsborough for life.
