Gareth Southgate, one of football's nice guys, faces up to his demons as the drop looms

Gareth Southgate turned up, that was the first surprise. Actually, he was even a little early for his engagement at an office within the drab boundaries of a charmless Middlesbrough business park.

He signed autographs and was polite and accommodating to just about all who crossed his path and, when he adjourned to have photographs taken on the banks of the Tees, he was obliging and helpful and nobly resisted the temptation to throw himself into the river below.

Tales of the unexpected revitalise the usual suspects

This week's surprises in the Champions League quarter-finals were exactly what the competition needed if it was to avoid a certain staleness.

D.C. United Cockblocked by Prince George's County

DC United's quest to leave RFK stadium has hit another obstacle as the Prince George's County Council has denied requests for funding. I guess any amount of bullshit pie charts and bar graphs demonstrating the benefit to the local economy can't trump the fact that municipal governments everywhere are having a hard time coming up with the funds to cover operating costs, let alone frivolous stadium outlays. While this is a serious blow to DCU's management I'm guessing that most of their fans are not too disappointed as RFK remains one of the best soccer venues in the country.
