Stability has a fragility. For the second successive season, Aston Villa finished sixth. Yet after spending much of the campaign apparently on the brink of a seismic advance into the top four, even that had the feel of an anti-climax. And even if a station in the top six suggested consolidation, Villa are now in grave danger of going backwards.
