US makes Beckham front-page news
It is not quite the cover of Time or Newsweek, but David Beckham’s appearance on the front of this week’s Sports Illustrated, the American magazine, is a first notable achievement in his attempt to “break the United States”. “Will He Change the Fate of American Soccer?” the headline asks of the new face of the sport Stateside. Making the cover of SI is not a bad way for Beckham to begin.

I take umbrage with the tag line on the front. "Will he change the fate of American soccer" sounds like we're all hoisting the chalice of hemlock to our lips or something. The league was not doomed before Goldenballs signed and the league is not doomed if Goldenballs doesn't "save" it.
Of course, but they've got to sell the damn rag, don't they? They need to appeal to all those soccer-haters out there who will buy SI out of fear that Goldenballs WILL change the fate of American soccer.
