Americans On The Continent: From Russia With Love

In only his second start of the season, Evgeni “Eugene” Starikov made a strong case for his inclusion in the first 11 for FC Tom Tomsk. Starikov opened the scoring for the home side after 37 minutes with a wonderful diving header that whistled past the helpless Zenit goalkeeper.

Zenit found an equalizer just a few minutes later through Aleksei Ionov, but Starikov and co. were unfazed, battling back to notch the winner almost immediately. On 52 minutes, Starikov first fought to win a header on goal, which deflected against the press of tangled bodies directly back to him. Starikov struck again at goal, but his second effort was saved by the Zenit ‘keeper. However, Pavel Golyshev was there to tuck the rebound home to make it 2-1.

Victor Stroev replaced Starikov to much applause in the 76th minute, and the hosts were able to hold on to the lead and ride out their 7th unbeaten match in a row.
