Mike Ashley last night planted a "For Sale" sign outside St James' Park with apparent reluctance but the club's owner is not about to offload Newcastle United at a knockdown price.
A certain part of me feels bad for Mike Ashley about this whole thing but I think he's got to accept some blame for it as well. By setting himself up in the eyes of the Geordie faithful as some kind of superfan, sitting the fans and wearing a "King Kev" shirt gives them the impression that he's willing to do anything for the club. He also obviously did a poor job of managing the relationship between Keegan and Wise, and while Keegan comes off looking like a spoiled brat it's clear that Ashley never really spelled out how the management team was going to function. Who knows if Dennis Wise is qualified to be a true Technical Director (Keegan certainly didn't think so) but ultimately it's up to Ashley to make sure that his setup is going to work. Also if he's going to turn tail and run the first time the fans protest, well, I guess he's just not cut out for ownership. Good luck trying to get value, Mike. You've just demonstrated to every potential buyer just what a nightmare the Magpie fans can be.
