Chelsea opened up a four-point gap at the top of the Premier League table after Everton stunned champions Manchester United, whose advantage over Arsenal was reduced to just two points. Elsewhere Tottenham climbed into fourth place after Manchester City and Liverpool played out a dour contest, Aston Villa put five goals past travel sick Burnley, Portsmouth's misery continued while West Ham handed their survival hopes a boost.
