Sunderland beat Liverpool 1-0 thanks to a fifth-minute goal from Darren Bent which beat Pepe Reina only after striking a beach ball thrown from the crowd by a Liverpool fan.
It later emerged that Jones should have ruled the goal out and, instead, ordered a free-kick after the ball struck an “outside agent”.
