Fox Wins U.S. TV rights to Champions League

Fox Soccer Channel beat out ESPN for right to the European Champions League starting next season, adding the top club event to a lineup that already includes the English Premier League and Italy's Serie A.

This is actually kind of bummer for 2 reasons- ESPN puts on a quality HD broadcast and it's in every bar and on every basic cable package. Popping out at lunch to catch the first half just got significantly more difficult. Also I like Judy Foudy on the desk. Still, no more asshole leprechaun is a big plus.

Indeed. I have heard talk of FSC going HD soon so perhaps this will prompt them to become a bit more in tune with major broadcasters. There's got to be more info on it out there somewhere. Why don't you do some digging, Bobby?

I found this:

"The deal, which could see the final air on FX, is expected to be officially announced later this week. Fox's current plans, according to sources, call for one match to air on Fox Soccer Channel and a different contest to be televised simultaneously on FSN. Fox Soccer would also air matches in delayed windows. Fox Sports En Espanol will also be in the mix on the Spanish side."

So it might not be too bad. A lot of FSN is HD already, as is FX. We'll have to see.
