Tottenham's successful efforts to take him from the Spanish club may have been unprincipled, but the craving to appoint Ramos was understandable. Now they will most likely hold on to him because it is traumatic even to think of cranking up a recruitment search all over again, particularly when the candidate they settled upon would surely have a less imposing CV.
