Major League Soccer's designated player rule is in the early stages of a two-year trial. But it is becoming apparent that the so-called Beckham Rule is going to be just that, a way for the league to contract David Beckham, and no others need apply.

A great example exactly the sort of bullshit column writing that we can expect from here on out as a result of the Beckham deal. There's a good point made about how foreign players may expect to get paid as much as Dave and won't settle for less, but I disagree with everything else. Specifically the points about Egar Davids are way off the mark. Perhaps Edgar did think that he was going to get paid $10 million at first but ultimately what Dallas told him was that they'd pay him above what he's worth (rapidly declining on the field and any percieved marketing benefits would be minimal)but not astronomically so. Just because Dallas is entitled to pay anyone whatever they want doesn't mean that they should or will. Faced with market value living at home in Amsterdam and compete in Europe or slightly more than that to live in Dallas and compete in the US Open cup he made the best decision for him. MLS clubs will eventually sort this out but the Beckham deal took years to come together and clubs aren't going to run out and sign the first guy they can just to play keep-up with the Galaxy marketing department.
That and the fact that the drug that allows Davids to best live with his glaucoma is legal in Amsterdam and not so much in Dallas...
