Among the more surprising aspects of the Premier League season so far is how, in sharply contrasting ways, Hull City and Tottenham Hotspur have defied expectations. Hull sit proudly in third place while few predicted that Spurs - even if the pre-season hype was typically overblown - would be rooted to the foot of the table after seven games, without a win or, it seems, much of a clue.
