MLS NEWS

Obviously the new coach of the Chicago Fire is an avid reader of SSN. Yesterday Bobbie suggested Dennis Hamlett "...go to 3-5-2, send Chad Diesel to the bench and move Rolfe back to the forward line". I'm not sure if the formation was changed, but Diesel didn't even make on to the bench, and Rolfe was returned to the starting eleven. As a result Tomasz Frankowski scored two first-half goals to lead the Fire to a 4-0 rout of the New England Revolution. Nice call Bob.
Bobbie has written an excellent little review of the game in his comment below. Check it out.

The Diesel scored a beauty to open it after New England gave Justin Mapp a week and a day on the ball to get his cross off. The game turned a few minutes later when Jeff Larentowicz was sent off for tackling Brandon Prideaux's ankle with his studs up. While this was certainly a correct interpretation of the letter of the law the foul itself was not bad and the ref probably should have shown yellow. After that it was silly time. New Polako hero Thomas Frankowski finished 2 easy chances, the kind of balls we never used to score, which is a great sign. Otherwise he wasn't overly involved. Blanco scored a man's penalty after another dubious award from the ref; Mapp was not clearly hacked but he did have his heels clipped a few times; the death by a thousand cuts approach. Certainly the penalty Arsenal didn't get against Liverpool was must more warranted. I still have major concerns over the formation but you can afford to play five forwards when you're man up so it didn't hurt us, though there were some scary moments at the beginning of the second half. Jon Busch doesn't inspire much confidance back there, though his "look of intensity" is unparalleled. NE had a couple of young kids from Gambia who made a really strong showing and I do so love to watch Chris Albright cry. Game time temperature was about 38 degrees and the rain turned to hail. Fortunately there was a terrible towel promotion so we were able to keep the seats somewhat dry. There just nothing like April sports.
