Serie A Wrap Up

The Italian season has drawn to a close. It played out pretty much as one might have expected; with Juventus relegated and several other of the top clubs docked points for their roles in the Calciopoli scandal Inter had the title handed to them on a silver platter. A lack of challengers for top honors did little to dent their ambition however and the laid waste to the competition, winning the league with weeks to spare and topping the table with a mind boggling 97 points and a +46 GD. Much of the real drama took place below them on the table as the big clubs battled through points deductions to secure spaces in Europe for next season. Lazio and Milan, both players in the Calciopoli scandal, managed to overcome deductions of 3 and 8 points respectively to secure the final two Champions League berths while Fiorentina's scintillating second half form saw them overcome an 18 point deduction to finish 6th, just 3 points out of the top four. It's a pretty astounding effort though one can't help but think that they achieved it by cheating. Unsurprising struggles at the foot of the table saw Chievo, Ascoli and Messina relegated. Juventus have won Serie B and will be promoted so barring any unforeseen summer scandals the balance of power should be restored and we'll have a chance to see Roberto Mancini's Inter have a chance to prove that they're capable of winning on a level playing field.
