Uncle Sam wary about Beckham

Michael Wilbon, of the Washington Postand ESPN’s Pardon The Interruption, another discussion programme, remembers the previous attempt to import world stars. “They tried this already,” he said. “I covered the NASL in the early 1980s, with Pelé, with Johan Cruyff, with Franz Beckenbauer — the best players ever, maybe. I saw 76,000 fans at Giants Stadium, and RFK Stadium [in Washington, DC] getting 54,000 people to watch Cruyff against the New York Cosmos — and then what happened? The league went out of business. And Beckham is not as good a player as any of those guys.
