Copa America: USA out as chances go begging!

Another supremely entertaining night in the Copa America: tons of goals, the US wasting chances on their way to the exit door, Roque Santa Cruz and Riquelme leading Paraguay and Argentina into the next round, Colombia showing they can actually play football, goalies injuring themselves at goal kicks, strikers injuring themselves at PKs, a red card, lots of camera shots of scantily dressed ladies in the crowd, and behind the scenes alleged scullduggery involving President SHugo Chavez. What more could you ask for?

A short round-up here for those of you in a rush and more detailed reports further below:
Argentina, Paraguay keep the goals flowing

The finishing was poor, but at least the US carved out some chances, which is promising. But at the back they were a joke, with the usual exception of Casey Keller. Moreover, Johnson seemed determined to maintain the poor standard he set against Argentina.
Paraguay Beat Wasteful USA, Into Last Eight

Argentina dazzled again, though their weakness in letting teams back into games resurfaced, while Colombia were hard to recognize from the spineless team that lost 5-0 to Paragauy. In fact they could have drawn level had an audacious effort by the left back from within his own half sneaked under the crossbar. One negative for Argentina will be the loss of Crespo, though somehow I think they'll find a replacement.

Under 20 World Cup: U.S. faces a must-win game against Poland

Of course the Americans were pleased they managed to bag a point they probably didn't deserve in their Group D opener against South Korea. However, in the end, it doesn't really change a thing. Their next match, versus Poland here Tuesday (5 p.m. ET, ESPNU), remains a must-win affair.

The Man City soap opera rolls on

No one seems to know what the hell is going on here. On one side there's Amnesty International's favourite Football owner, on the other there's dodgy Svenis, and in the middle are some of the EPL's most loyal fans. Somehow it's hard to see things ending well. The third piece, by Brian Glanville, is well worth your time.

Liverpool and Arsenal splash out on strikers

Arsenal and Liverpool have made moves in the transfer market in an effort to get goals. I wrote a couple of days ago that I'd have bought Tevez ahead of Torres, but there's no doubting the Spaniard's skill. Spanish experts seems to think Liverpool have paid over the odds, but Torres is only 23 and is exactly what they're looking for. His personality also makes him a match for the Reds. A huge Athletico fan from childhood, not only did he rule out going to Real but didn't want to play against his home team in the colours of another Spanish club. He also used to sport a quality mullet. Rafa's losing Luis Garcia however, so the Spanish speaking quota hasn't actually risen. As a result he's got his eyes on ManU's left back.

I know nothing about Arsenal's new forward Eduardo other than he seems to score plenty of goals, he netted the first goal at the Emirates, and that there are no good pictures of him on the web.

Graham Lister: Arsene Wenger's In-Tray

Amid the obituaries for Arsenal, whose disintegration as a major force in English football is being widely predicted by press, pundits and Spurs fans, the Gunners' manager, Arsene Wenger, has a number of critical issues to resolve, and the quicker he does so, the better - for the stability of the club and the blood pressure of Arsenal supporters everywhere.

Beckham Facing Hell In The US - Marsh

David Beckham is facing hell in the United States, according to Rodney Marsh, who played in the US in the 1970's.

"Other aspects he won't understand until he gets here is the fact that the referees are next to useless and offer little protection from young men who will be looking to make a name for themselves at David's expense."
